The Basement is DONE

We started our basement project on March 11, 2010 and agreed on a target completion date of June 11, 2011, giving us 15 months. We even bet on whether or not we’d meet our deadline – I was betting that it’d take longer. I didn’t want to be right, in fact, this was a bet I REALLY wanted to lose!! I had hoped that the bet would provide some motivation to stay on track and meet the deadline. Maybe it did help, but I think that getting pregnant really kicked the project into high gear. We NEEDED this extra room in order to shuffle things around in the rest of our house to make room for the baby. On June 2nd – 1 day after the birth of our son and 9 days shy of the original deadline – we received the “use and occupancy” certificate which means the basement has passed all of its inspections and it is officially DONE!!!

For the most part, everything went according to plan and there were no major deviations from the original design. We have a family room/den with a gas fireplace, a large hallway leading to a storage room and a laundry room, a new full bathroom, and 2 built-ins with cabinets and shelving. We hired pros for plumbing, electrical, mudding/sanding drywall, and carpet installation, but Bill did everything else himself and it all looks awesome! He did have some help along the way from his dad and his brother especially, and also from a couple of our friends, my mom, and myself.

We moved one of our couches down there temporarily, but we plan to purchase a new one ASAP. The TV and game consoles were set up last week and as of yesterday, we have been hanging out down there during the day.

I will add some pictures to the Basement Pictures page, but for now, below are the before and after pictures.
